The Suspension Of DCP Abba Kyari
The suspension of DCP Abba Kyari, head of Intelligence Response Unit by the Police Service Commission on the directive of Inspector General of Police did not come to many Nigerians as surprise. The highly decorated super cop who in the last one decade was in the good news for bursting criminal syndicates has been indicted by the US Federal Bureau of Investigations as a conspirator in the $1.1million fraud involving Ramon Olorunwa Abbas popularly known as Hushpuppi against Qatari business man.
Typically, opinions of Nigerians have remained divided on his alleged complicity. To some, Abba Kyari who has carved a niche for himself in the course of discharging his constitutional responsibilities and so must have stepped on the toes of powerful people hence his current travails. To others, Kyari is being blackmailed by his enemies who are not comfortable with his towering popularity.
Whatever may be the case, the Federal Bureau of Investigation FBI, United States of America, it was that carried out the investigation and came up with the report of his involvement.
The other point is that he actually admitted that he interacted with the notorious cybercriminal, Hushpuppi in the past. He claimed that the latter admired his clothes which he displayed on Instagram page and so requested for one to be sown for him. He also admitted that Hushpuppi sent him the phone number of a suspect alleged to have threatened his family’s life. And when he carried out the investigation, he found out it was not true and so released the suspect.
Simply from what transpired between DCP Kyari and Hushpuppi, it is morally wrong and unethical for the super cop to be hobnobbing with such characters.
Whether Kyari’s hands are soiled in the alleged fraud or not is left for him to defend himself. What many of his supporters find disturbing is how he brought himself so low, putting his hard-earned reputation in jeopardy. Kyari’s travails came at a time when Nigerians have lost confidence in the Nigerian Police force with the likes of him being cited as an exception and possible role model.
Now, there are Rumours of illegal acquisition of assets scattered across the length and breadth by the suspended DCP Kyari. Nigerians could only but wonder if he is not fated to go the way of Ibrahim Magu, the former EFCC boss, who fell from fame to infamy. With how public trust is being abused by men in uniform, government should pay more emphasis on the character of its personnel.
For Abba Kyari, a once celebrated icon and super cop, the onus is on him to prove his innocence. The Kyari’s unfortunate saga, being one among many should serve as a wakeup call for government to reform the battered image of the police force.
