VIDEO: Man slaps French President Macron
During a visit to the Drome area on Tuesday, a man smacked French President Emmanuel Macron across the face as he was welcoming people behind a fence.
Macron was in the country to discuss the reopening of restaurants as the country begins to emerge from its state of emergency.
The validity of a video circulating online in which Macron is seen approaching a line of people, prepared to shake hands, when one individual behind the barrier reaches out and slaps him, has been confirmed by the Elysee Palace.
It was described as “an attempted slap” by the palace.
Two males were apprehended, one of them was the suspected attacker, according to broadcaster Freanceinfo.
The two suspects, according to BFM TV, were around 28 years old.
According to reports, the man who slapped Macron yelled “Montjoie Saint-Denis” and “Down with Macronism,” a rallying cry of the previous French monarchy that is still used by royalists.
After the assault, Macron is surrounded by security personnel in the footage. It’s unclear whether he was hurt or what happened to the persons on the other side of the fence.
Macron continued his stay in Tain-l’Hermitage, near Lyon, according to the palace.
Politicians from all political parties denounced the act.
Macron has been booed and verbally harassed in the past, according to media sources, but never physically.
He was pelted with eggs during his tenure as Economy Minister.
